Background information
- General Information: Starting with the 1994 vintage, the Roulot wines are aged 16-18 months before bottling. The wines spend only 12 months in barrel and then an addtional 4 to 6 months in stainless steel tanks. (In this respect, quite similar to Leflaive.)
- In Issue 49 of the IWC (Jul/Aug 93), Steven Tanzer describes this estate's then-current batonnage practices as follows: Since Jean-Marc Roulot took over following the 1988 harvest, this estate has used “less batonnage-'to avoid odd, animal aromas and flavors. Some do it as often as three or four times a week: I've cut it to once or twice each month.”
- In vintage 1996: batonnage was done, but “very infrequently ” Note: this is another producer who admits to significant “cork problems” per Allen Meadows (Burghound Issue 16), who reports “enormous bottle variation” and cork problems acknowledged by Roulot. In IWC Issue 127 Stephen Tanzer reports that 1996 is still considered by Roulot to be his greatest vintage, followed by 2002 and 2004.
- In vintage 1999: per Tanzer: lees stirred “only six or seven times in total.” Per Meadows: “did less battonage than normal and stopped, as he usually does, when the malos began.”
- In vintage 2004: Roulot claimed that there was a “lot of oidium” and did two passes through the vines which had oidium infestations to in order to eliminate the affected grapes. Did very little batonnage
- In vintage 2005: stirred the lees only until the malos started in November or December of 2005.
- In vintage 2006: per Allen Meadows “has goine to an almost 100% coating of paraffin and has raised his free SO2 target to between 30 and 35 ppm.”
